While on my way to and from work everyday I am constantly astonished by the sheer number of white iPod headphone cords I spot. Of course I’m one of those people too. It sure does make me feel like just another lemming consumer… [ Though 1) I do think that iPods are great devices and 2) I probably would have bought another brand, but got an iPod as a gift. ]
Seeing so many of the white cords inevitably makes me think about my daily struggles with my messy tangle of headphone wires. The ear buds always work their way into a knot, and are always such a hassle to extract. Plus I have the Apple iPod remote which adds an additional length of wirey confusion. Somewhere in the space between these two separate issues I came up with the morbid thought that one day an iPod lemming will end up choking on a tangled cord. Or, even more morosely, committing suicide using the signature cords to hang themselves (Please don’t try this at home. This parody was performed by a trained stunt professional) So that is how the iDie Apple ad parody came to being. I guess it’s pretty sick and weird, but I couldn’t help myself. I seriously need some Shure earbuds and a shrink.

I just posted a new song to my site called “Beach Break“. It’s a progressive breaks track with a teeny bit more of a more gritty, hard edge than the tracks I was producing before. This is mostly inspired by the style of Breakfastaz tracks and a few other almost NRG type songs that really get me dancin’. Though it still retains the signature sound I try to produce of catchy blippy melodies overlayed with lush string harmonies and a bouncin drum track. Hopefully I will have a proper new Spyhunter site completed by end of year, as well as more new mix sets, songs, and West Coast gigs. Watch out SF!

What happens when you take 1000 lbs of butter, a bored artist in Tulsa and an epic movie? Butter Wars! I guess every year they make some butter creation to celebrate wonderful cows, or yummy milk, or the lovely people that milk cows (I don’t know!) Well, this time they spread it on with both the power of the Dark Side and the Force and came up with a Darth Vader / Yoda combo piece. My question is - Will George Lucas come after them for copyright infringement?!

I’m always way behind on what’s cool. (Probably because I’m just a geek at heart) I guess I’m always playing catch up. So I’m sure everyone and their mother have already discovered Threadless, where people submit tshirt designs, people vote, and the winning design gets printed. This is a great concept! Let the designing begin!

Why walk with regular boring flip flops / sandles when you can imprint the sand with poignant messages like “Make Love”, “Love You”, and my favorite, “Mad Sex” Riiiiiiight. The Japanese come up with some ground breaking ideas - and then there are Mad Sex slippers. Check out the other products in the store - some neat stuff.

What happens when you let loose 10,000 superballs on a street in San Francisco? Check out this really cool commercial by Sony, and some of the photos by someone who was there at the taping! Apparently they covered drains, put up nets, and had a large staff to clean up - but it still must have been a formidable task to find all those balls! I wonder if they had to account for all of them? Did things in the area get dents in them?

The November issue of Wired has an article about a man’s quest to fine tune the programming on his cochlear implant to hear music as well as he could before he lost his hearing. The Bionic Quest for BolĂ©ro is an interesting read that covers some of the technical stuff regarding electrodes, sound ranges and perception of music that I’ve always found intriguing.

Here’s a weird thing - last night in Manhattan a strong ‘yummy’ smell wafted through the streets. It smelled SO good in fact that the authorities got involved and wanted to figure out what it was too! Well, not reallly. But in the end, no one seems to know exactly what it smelled like (Syrup?), or where it came from. So far, there are no casaulties, and no suspects. This does remind me of an article I read about testing the flow of an airborne gas through Manhattan for preventing Bio Terrorism. Related? Do we need to be protected from toxic Maple Syrup gas?

As it turns out, the smart folks at MIT proved the Mythbusters wrong about using the sun to ignite a wooden boat. Sure, MIT might be more geeky, but I don’t see MIT students being allowed to blow a cement truck to smithereens. Also, as it turns out, you can buy a t-shirt at Target that says “I do my own stunts” as Adam has worn before on the show.

[NEW - Buy Mythbusters ‘Reject your Reality’ shirt]
I caught my favorite show Mythbusters on TV the other night - and I noticed Adam wearing a shirt that said “I reject your reality and substitute my own” on it! How cool! I immediately wondered if they were for sale, and just as quickly decided I would just make my own! Here’s a simple design of the Mythbusters inspired tshirt. Later in the show, they mentioned that you can vote on a design for a Mythbusters shirt - but I was disappointed that they don’t include a “I reject your reality …” shirt. Now that I’ve proven myself to be a big geek, I’ll shut up.
Also available: I DO MY ALL MY OWN STUNTS gear, plain I REJECT YOUR REALITY text-only tee, and more! Look here!

It’s time again for YAAS (Yet Another Apple Suit) and this time it’s Lugz suing Apple for supposedly ripping off the design of a TV ad. They do have some striking similarities, but as Azriel put it, the ‘post-modern infinite loop of influence’ could mean it’s simply a matter of a cultural vortex of hot design styles, cultural influences & color choices spitting out a twin. After all, monkeys could have written Macbeth, right?

superfuture is a cool collection of reviews of galleries, shops, bars and more for quite a few major cities (New York & Tokyo being highlights) For a newbie to a city it’s a great place to start.

While the yellow ‘Support our Troops’ magnetic ribbons that are ubiquitous in the 50th state are not as prevalent here in San Francisco, here is a funky alternative. Get your hippy on, and peace out with VermontPeaceWorks

This is a really cool collection of cassette tape designs. I stubbornly held onto my precious mixtapes until quite recently, but now own exactly none. I would imagine given the proliferation of CD burners and the non random-access-ness of tapes, that they will slowly slip into the abyss of dead-tech. Now, which will become extinct first, the VHS tape or cassette? (And will anyone notice when that last tape falls from the back of a dump truck into a landfill?)

Philippe Starck designed some funky watches for Fossil that I think are quite nice. Definately not your average timepiece. Great construction and design.

This watch uses some kind of retro tube technology which I would totally go for, except that the proportions and size really turn me off.

And I’m totally all about this 80s-ish blocky one - the only issue here being functionality and perhaps loss of sanity. Being that you have to read binary to tell the time, and you have only 5 seconds to figure it all out (you have to manually activate the LEDs) this watch is far from practical.
