Mythical

Posted on October 28th, 2005

As it turns out, the smart folks at MIT proved the Mythbusters wrong about using the sun to ignite a wooden boat. Sure, MIT might be more geeky, but I don’t see MIT students being allowed to blow a cement truck to smithereens. Also, as it turns out, you can buy a t-shirt at Target that says “I do my own stunts” as Adam has worn before on the show.

Actually, MIT didn’t bust Mythbusters. They used modern mirrors and were aiming 100′ away at wood that had never been wet.

When MIT joined Mythbusters in October of 2005 to do it with period materials, the best they could do was fire one could have stomped out, at less than 50′ after over an hour of work at a perfectly still boat with midday sun. Not feasible with a moving attacking army in the morning sun(Syracuse faces east).

Besides, I’d have to check my notes, but I think they also had switched to the modern mirrors then too. I think that can be seen in the DVD.
