rsstroom reader™[via Spyhunter]

A crazy new product out of Taiwan seems to be aimed at the feed dependent of us out there. The ‘rsstroom reader’ is a bathroom gadget that prints news feeds onto your T-P - that’s right, your TOILET PAPER! The best part is the “biometrics” toilet seat that’ll figure out who you are based on your weight and prints the news you want - not your roommates tabloid garbage. Going to the rsstroom will never be boring again! Here’s the scoop:

Yi Tien Electronics enters the digital home with rsstroom reader™ personal news delivery system

TAIPEI, December 4, 2005 - Yi Tien Electronics today announced a breakthrough news delivery system for the restroom. At a press conference, Yi Tien Electronics unveiled the rsstroom reader™, an rss reader for the restroom which prints directly to toilet tissue through RapidResolution® inkjet technology. Complete with wireless connectivity, the rsstroom reader™ will print out up to the minute articles from rss 2.0 and atom newsfeeds. Configurable via web browser*, the rsstroom reader™ can be set up to output an unlimited number of feeds in either sequential, alternating, or random mode. Included with the rsstroom reader™ deluxe package is the biometric seat which allows for customized feed output based on the unique features of users. The biometric seat also allows for tracking & printing the progress of your weight-loss regime.

Yi Tien Electronics also announced the future availability of a commercial version of the rsstroom reader™, a more robust model intended for installation in public restrooms. The commercial model allows advertisers to place customized messages targeted to a specific audience through Yi Tien Electronics’ online subscription service.

* rsstroom reader™ control panel requires Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher on PC or Mac

Can you give a link to the company product page?
The http://www.yider.com/ site does not list this as one of their products.

So how’d they solve the ink smudge problem? It’d kinda defeat the whole purpose of the TP otherwise…

  • 4. Anonymous  |  December 7th, 2005 at 7:00 pm

I have one of these and if you sit on the paper, it does bleed through, and you can read the news in a mirror off your own bottom!!

  • 5. Leon  |  December 7th, 2005 at 7:39 pm

Mind letting us know where you found this piece of news? I can’t find any info on it or the company.

Requires Internet Explorer 6 or higher on PC or Mac….

Ummm, Jan…I think the idea is to read the news before you use the TP, not after. That should solve the smudge problem

Great product! The greatest feature is the satisfaction of wiping my bottom with the state of current journalism.

I must warn those who have a hairy derriere the biometric feature has some glitches. The system has problems identifying through numerous course fibers.

  • 17. Anonymous  |  December 8th, 2005 at 7:26 am

The biometrics ought to include infrared fecal analysis; the food you ate 4-8 hours ago will certainly give a better idea of your interests.

  • 18. EntityX  |  December 8th, 2005 at 9:32 am

Great product, at least we dont need to look for a newspaper or book when we are going to do the big business. Just hope it will not smudge, else it would be great to look at only.

A fine use of a Zebra printer.

Though I’d like to know how they prevent the TPfrom catching fire since the Zebra is a thermal printer.

Kinda chate, but it looks cool at least :P

  • 22. Anonymous  |  December 8th, 2005 at 1:41 pm

It’s worth mentioning that IE 6 on Mac doesn’t exist. Anyone noticed how MS is absolutely horrible at updating their browser? Even the PC version still has no tabs.

  • 24. Anonymous  |  December 8th, 2005 at 2:47 pm

IE does have tabs - via MSN search bar. here

  • 25. Anonymous  |  December 8th, 2005 at 3:22 pm

I think this is bull. All it is a Zebra printer picture doctored up. Nice try

    From Anonymous Asshole:

And when it’s not busy printing the news for the next user, it can busy itself pumping out bibles. That way, there will be plenty of choice asswipe even in the event of a power failure.

the likelihood that this product will ever make it retail: very low you’d be much better off recycling an old laptop LCD screen to display a live RSS feed. Possible ways to do this:
    http://www.macmod.com/content/view/210/2
    http://www.macworld.com/2004/08/features/thenextdoityourselfmac/index2.php
the ways to network this vary, bluetooth is the best alternative so long as distance isn’t an issue, obviously cables would be too cumbersome, so an AirPort Card would be nice..a possible solution would be to mount the laptop whole and use it’s AirPort Connection:
    http://www.macmod.com/content/view/467/1/
from here, it’s a simple matter to use Apple Remote Desktop to log in to your laptop, and make it behave however you want…best part: you don’t have to wipe your bum with ink!

  • 31. Anonymous  |  December 8th, 2005 at 8:06 pm

This is obviously a fake. First of all, how could toilet paper have the strength to hold itself up over the rollers, and if you look at the roll of labels in the printer, you can see two labels seperated on its backing.

    Fools!

I’m surpised David Winer is not suing this company claiming he a) invented XML single-handly, and b) for a percentage of sales because he coined the term ‘RSS’ to describe what was really straight XML all along! DAMM!

I’ve been doing my own private blog on the roll as an alternative to the crossword. Of course, it all ends up down the john. I think someone once made toilet paper with crossword puzzles on it.

anon 2:21pm, I trust no one’s waiting for MS to update IE for Mac. They bailed for good about 2 1/2 years ago after the release of test versions of Safari.

  • 44. Anonymous  |  December 14th, 2005 at 12:19 pm

If they can print puzzles on pringles chips than they can print words on toilet paper.

  • 45. Anonymous  |  December 15th, 2005 at 4:51 pm

Issue: What happens when you need to go, but there aren’t any news updates at that time? Hmm…

Are they expecting us to schedule #2 for only after major news breaks?

    That could be tough…

  • 46. web wanderer  |  December 17th, 2005 at 3:20 pm

If they integrate fax, i’ll buy that stuff. coz i always would like to print faxes on TP
