Well, it’s very obvious that a whole lot of people loved Lazy Sunday, the SNL digital short. Now some very not-lazy people have been creating the requisite iterations of the hilarious skit. This is the wonderful genius that is set free when material is released under a Creative Commons license.

I grind teeth together whenever I hear a dot matrix printer sound used for a modern inkjet printer on CSI. For a show that likes to think it’s using cutting edge special effects to look cool, I think that’s pretty sad. Well, it turns out that their foley artist doesn’t restrict themselves to only dot matrix printers to shape the sonic mind-scape (yuh huh, you heard me!) of the CSI lab… Some of the Miami lab’s ‘New fancy gear’ sounds just like a Spectrum ZX - an early computer in the era of Amiga & Atari ST. Jeez, everything these days is retro-modern
Interested how sounds are foleyed?

The SawStop is a safety oriented table-saw that can detect if you have stuck an appendage into the spinning blade of doom and instantly (and I mean instantly!) drop the blade down out of harms way. Check out the hi-speed vid of a hot dog getting saved just in the nick (!) of time. I wouldn’t want my *ahem* dog sliced in two!

I don’t know about you, but my wallet is always getting fat. And not with cash mind you, mostly crap. Maybe it’s time to fill that wallet with nifty utilities instead, like a set of toothpicks, pseudo-wrenches, even cuff links! These are only to be defeated by the card pipe that can be admired even if you don’t plan on using it!

Resource Revival has some stuff made from bicycle parts. Some are cheesey, some are fairly cool! The tea-light candle holders are such an odd juxtaposition of soft mood lighting and hard, industrial metal cogs. Nice conversation pieces at the very least. Next time I see a dead gutted bike on the sidewalk, I may view it in a different light.

I was none too impressed by this article about the “flying car” spotted on Google Maps in Australia. Whatta loada hootennanny. I was much more intrigued however, by the shot of a British Lancaster bomber flying over homes in England. Now that is pretty random. I wonder if you took the entire G maps imagery, how many snapshots of planes would occur, and what would turn out as the most frequently accidentally photographed from orbit? How deep is a satellite photo’s depth of field? Would a plane at a fairly high altitude become an out of focus smudge? Plane photo-recognition software anyone?

Anime review:
I was craving Anime over the last couple of days, so after a little research and waiting for Azureus later, I was ready for my fix. On the menu was AIR [tv], a 13 episode show that was featured on many people’s top 10 animes for 2005. I had no idea what the story was. Well, I got sucked in right away. With overcutesy characters & an intriguing story, my interest was captured rom the start. The dog named Potato that says “piko piko” is hilarious. As the show progressed and the quality continued, I was quite surprised by the lack of the usual cliche panty-shots, breast fondlation, especially since it is the standard fare of one male character and a whole lotta females. However, as the story wound down I felt sorely disappointed and confused. The story went on some weird tangents and had odd twists that didn’t seem to make much sense. There are some really touching moments though, and it’s worth watching, despite it’s shortcomings. It was only after I was done with the show that I found out that the anime is based on a bishoujo game of the same name, which may account for the story. I’ll give this show a 7.5 outta ten.

The Discovery Channel show Dirty Jobs, with host Mike Rowe, doesn’t have any shirts or other merchandise for sale. That’s a shame - people seem to get a kick outta the show - I know I do! So check out these shirts and tees I threw together that say “It’s a dirty job .. but someone’s gotta do it”, “dirty boy”, and “dirty girl”.

Wine connoisseurs have always been a very choosy breed, sometimes willing to spend exordinant amounts of money on the experieence of enjoying wine. “The Pek Wine Steward prevents wine from spoiling by injecting argon, an inert gas, into thebottle before sealing it airtight with silicon.” Wowee. Fluid dynamics modelling, inert gases, gas injection. My thoughts? Just finish off the bottle! Though this would be perfect to enjoy that $1000 bottle for more than one session.

Take the dogs from the slo-mo Pleix video, and the stop-motion mentality from the Squarepusher clip, mash em together, and you’d probably win up with something similar to this “Vie de Chien” stop-motion short by Peter Cserba set to Aphex Twin. So that’s where all those discarded subway tickets end up!

Another music video, this time for PochePoche by Squarepusher. Stop motion antics involving a whole lotta bottle caps, a couple beers, and some Super Mario action thrown in for good measure. Another excellent Squarepusher vid is “Come on my Selectah” by director Chris Cunningham (Check out his Director’s Series DVD, as well and Gondry & Spike Jonze.)

What’s better than dogs in super slow motion? Dogs in super slow motion with lasery looking beams and a driving deep trance beat. The track is Birds, and the vid is produced by Pleix, who have a ton of interesting film work that spans from Basement Jaxx videos to the Netlag globe / webcam / time-lapse clip that was spreading around lately. Check it.
