16 foot ball of jeans

jeanball.jpgReminiscent of a weird Katamari Ball, this 16 foot ball of jeans looks like it’s supposed to be saying less about the fun game, and perhaps more about being chained to American culture.

Grid Wars 2

grid_wars_2.jpgWhat happens when you take the retro classic like Asteroids and pump it up on adrenaline and fast computers? Geometry Wars for XBox. Don’t have an XBox? No problem, Mark Incitti has made Grid Wars 2, a superb clone of the game in Blitz Basic and it is available for Windows, OS X, and Linux. The gameplay is fast-paced and addictive - it’s been a while since I’ve been so enthralled by such a simple game. The premise is the same as Asteroids - destroy everything. get powerups for better weapons. The really cool thing is the Grid. I won’t claim to completely understand how the game works, but there seems to be a grid that represents gravity, and it is warped by any object on the game field. The controls are unusual - you set your direction of fire independent of your movement direction. An in-depth review is here Hard to explain - just download and check it out (before the XBox peeps get the clone taken offline)

Cursor Kite

While on the topic of arrow shaped things, this Cursor Kite is super cool.

Arrow Coat Hooks

These arrow coat hooks look really sweet. They’re limited edition, so I’m tempted to try to make some myself. coat_hook_arrows.jpg

Hello Hilton

paris_hello_kitty.jpgThis is perhaps the only Hello Kitty thing that I am quite repulsed by. Available only in Japan (thank god!), the Sanrio Paris Hilton HK doll is a strange cross-branding of cultures. Bling and cute just don’t go together.

Edible Memo Pads

edible-memo-pads-754548.jpgWhen I saw that a company was selling Edible Memo Pads, I immediately thought of Douglas Coupland’s novel jPod. In this book, one of the main characters has a office cubicle where almost everything is edible. Oddly enough, Coupland’s precursor to jPod, Microserfs, also has an ‘odd food’ thread where one character ends up eating only flat food.

Hello Kitty gets Plastic

hellokittyplatinumcard.jpg
I have the feeling that my better half will give in to her addiction to all things ‘neko’ and ‘kawaii’ and sign up for this Hello Kitty credit card. Things will inevitably go downhill from there…

movements in wood and foam

Ben Hopson created some really elegant interactive demos that are so eleborate and smooth that the wood and foam takes on an air of beauty usually reserved for refined artworks.

Bump Keying

Bump Keying is a method of lockpicking that requires no picks (or skills really!) With a specially cut key and a sharp rap on the end of the key, almost any lock can be opened. This video is of European origin, so perhaps this won’t work elsewhere - but that would require me to do research. As if!

Minimal Site Portraits

internetportrait.jpg
There is something quite spooky about the Internet Soul Portraits. Popular sites such as cnn.com are screen captured and all imagery and content is removed - leaving only the empty shell of layout. The web is such an intrinsically content / data driven medium, that it becomes very strange to find a site that looks absolutely devoid of content - yet still implying the presence of it. Imagery of the abandoned mall in the original Dawn of the Dead springs to mind.

Gravitram Kinetic Sculptures

gravitram-kinetic_sculpture.jpgGravitrams are ultra-intricate kinetic sculptures built by Shab Levy between 1973 and 1999. Most of them are basically rolling balls travelling on metal rails, in a very Rube Goldberg fashion. The movie clip is quite retro, but very hypnotic. I’d love to see one of these in person.

The Evolution of Desktops

system_10.gif
The Evolution of Desktops is a fascinating look at how desktop interfaces have changed over the years. I was a little disappointed to see that other OSes such as Amiga and Atari were omitted, but it’s still quite nostalgic to see the ancient Mac screens!

Russell’s teapot

Wikipedia’s entry about Russell’s teapot, which discusses belief in religion in an analogy about an orbiting teapot. So I thought it would be apropos on Teapot the Cat.
