Ain’t got Bupkis

I found the
Urban Dictionary
’s 6th definition of the word “Bupkis” quite humurous, if a little raunchy

Sound Chaser by Yuri Suzuki

The Sound Chaser, by Yuri Suzuki is a really awesome remapping of established concepts. Cut apart old records, build some little cars that act as record players, and race the audio-producing vehicles around the sonic track. Neato!

Death Magnetic - Sounds like &%$@, Better on Guitar Hero?

Metallics fans have been complaining that the new album Death Magnetic is so over compressed that there is some serious distortion in the audio quality. Interestingly, Gizmodo has posted about an audio engineer who claims that the Guitar Hero version of the song actually sounds much better since they used a mastering of the track without the compression. So of course, there are fans out there hacking GH audio data to recreate a better version.

Japanese ‘Net Hotels’

Net Hotels

CNN has a video article (preceded by annoying mandatory 30 sec ad) about the rise of “Net hotels” in Japan. These are living spaces of a scale between capsule hotels and Japanese business hotel rooms. They have just enough space for a few days worth of clothes, a computer, and somewhere to sleep. This niche market caters to the Japanese unemployed who may have lost their homes and property due to bankruptcy etc. Japan sure knows how to sell things to very tagreted demographics.

Time to get Social

I’ve been on Twitter for a while, but never really embraced the whole concept. Recently read an article by Clive Thompson that has inspired me to give Twitter, Facebook etc another try. With iPhone apps such as Loopt and Twitterific, the micro-publishing medium becomes much more manageable. At the very least I’ll stay connected! Next step is to integrate all these services where possible.

2008 Summer Paralympic Games

Boston.com’s Big Picture features images of atheletes at the Paralympics in Beijing. The photos are inspiring, eye-opening, even a little uncomfortable - but totally compelling at conveying the power of the human spirit.

blackbird, fly TLR camera

The blackbird, fly TLR camera from Superheadz is a wonderful, playful design for a retro / novelty hobby. For $100 I’d pick up this Japanese TLR to use (and decorate with!) The only question that remains, is what color to choose!

Dodge Challenger

The new Dodge Challenger is the latest example of the American auto industry’s lack of originality through remaking classic cars. It’s subjective, but this one is perhaps not quite as offensive as some of the others (Mustang, Charger) but still is a bit of a cop out. I’m excited when they reach all the way back and remake the Model-T.

I’m going to have to go to Union square to see if the tiny tiny billboard for Spore is still up. Hope so, since the game comes out today (on a Sunday. The 7th day (of September)) hmmmm Intentional joke?

Newton / iPhone copy and paste

Someone has posted a video of how the Apple Newton did copy/paste, as a suggestion on how the iPhone should achieve this task. I’m not sure it’s the right answer, but it does make me wonder if the iPhone should have customizable sound effects! I want my OS X sound palette on my iPhone :) We’ll see Tuesday if we get copypaste and if so, how they are doing it. The UX world will be all abuzz.
